AT Evaluations in Schools 

An Assistive Technology (AT) evaluation helps identify technology solutions tailored to a student’s learning challenges. These tools support reading, writing, communication, organization, and physical access to the curriculum, promoting academic success and independence.  

Examples of Assistive Technology in Schools:  

- Speech-to-Text on a Chromebook:  Helps students with writing difficulties by converting spoken words into text.  

- Text-to-Speech Software: Reads digital text aloud for students with reading challenges.  

- Audiobooks & Screen Readers: Support students with dyslexia or visual impairments.  

- Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS): Helps non-verbal students communicate using images.  

- Alternative Keyboards & Mice: Assist students with fine motor challenges in using a computer.  

The evaluation ensures that selected tools match the student’s needs and provide meaningful support in their educational journey.

??  How to Request an AT Evaluation  ??

1. Write an email to: 

   - School Psychologist, Principal or Special Education Teacher for your child’s grade level

2. CC (Carbon Copy) to:

  - Principal (if email is address to someone else)

- Special Education Teacher for your child’s grade level (if email is addressed to someone else)

   - General Education Teacher for your child’s grade level

   - Additional relevant staff (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist) if you believe their services might be necessary.

3. Email Attachment: 

   - Attach the completed Request for Evaluation for Special Education Services Letter as a PDF

RE: Assistive Technology Evaluation (AT) Dear Mr/Ms, 

Our son/daughter, Students Name, is an IDEA-eligible student. Student name attends School Name, in the grade and in Teacher’s class. He/She is currently receiving special education and therapies through the school district. 

I believe his/her curriculum is demanding, and he/she is having extreme difficulty accessing the learning. Student name has a handwriting disability called Dysgraphia, and he/she experiences anxiety regarding handwriting. 

Assistive technology will help Student Name to learn how to write and increase his/her independence with writing. It will allow Student Name to explore his/her imagination, dictate thoughts onto paper, and possibly perform at a higher academic level for writing/reading/spelling. (If student struggles with one area or receives services for writing, reading or spelling, choose those areas to include. AT can be used to support reading, spelling, and writing.) 

I am requesting a formal Assistive Technology Evaluation at public expense. 

Performed by an Assistive Technology Specialist using the SETT Framework or other formal evaluation process for Assistive Technology. 

This evaluation should consider Student Name’s Strengths, how the Environment may prevent him/her from accessing learning and the AT device and tools, the Tasks that are essential for student name to be successful, and what types of Tools will be needed to access learning in the classroom and at home for completing assignments using AT.

After the evaluation, I would like the Assistive Technology Specialist to review the results with the full IEP Team. Then as a Team revise his/her IEP as needed to reflect the evaluation findings.
